Protecting Our Homes from the Worldwide Epidemic of Addictions

* “Protecting Our Homes from the Worldwide Epidemic of Addictions” Family Lecture Series featuring David Handy, next Friday, Nov. 13 (movie at 5 p.m. and lecture at 7 p.m.). Free admission ages 12 and up. This very special Family Lecture Series discussion is devoted to the topic of recognizing, avoiding, and overcoming addictive behaviors, including pornography. Come watch the movie “Fireproof” at 5 p.m. – and then stay for an insightful and impactful evening with David Handy, attorney and former AHS board member, who serves on the LDS Church headquarters committee producing worldwide handbook and training materials regarding addiction prevention and recovery. An annual lecture, this family-focused training provides practical information, tools, and insights that will help protect your family in increasingly perilous times.

* Please Speak Openly and Early With Your Children. Regardless of whether you can attend the November 13 lecture, we again encourage all parents of students in all grade levels to speak openly and early with your children about sensitive issues such as gender roles, human sexuality, addictive behaviors, appropriate and inappropriate ways to talk with friends about the human body, and more. This is as important for young children in elementary school as it is for adolescents. As parents, too many of us err in assuming that our children are not ready for this kind of conversation, when in fact – it is usually we as adults who are at a loss for how to appropriately conduct the conversation. For practical guidelines and principles in speaking to our children, see the following link to “A Parent’s Guide” published by the LDS Church, available on lds.org, and written specifically for parents with children in different age categories:
